By Johnathan Sanders Anyone with a lawn, no matter how small will at some point need to cut the grass, up root any weeds etc. Like most people, I normally manage to do this at weekends. Unfourtunately for me, recently, the cable on my lawn mower was cut when trimming the grass at the weekend. This of course led me to go any buy a new mower (had an excuse now!). For what its worth, I would recommend anyone with a small to medium size lawn to purchase a lawn mower that comes with a grass gatherer attached- you will wounder how you managed to live without it!. On a saftety point of view, ‘power plugs’ only cost around 10. They immedialely cut the power from the plus and hence reduce the chance of an injury, albeit a serious one. The great thing about the power plug is, it can be used for any electrical appliance, ie, drills, irons, anyware there is a danger of an electrical accident. Another safety point to consider is the actual blade itslef. There are very robust plastic blades avaiable, and replacements can be ordered cheaply. I would recommend plastic blades for well kept gardens, where there is not much danger of your mower trying to mow a brick or something, and hence damaging the blade. It is definately worth spending a bit extra and obtain an extended warranty. Now days warranties for these sort of applicances tend to also cover accidental damage. Regarding the lawnmowers, without plugging any specfic modules, I have found the lighter lawn mowers tend to be a lot easier to manouvre without comprising quality. By Todd Going If your health has ever been negatively affected by a drug makers negligence, you have the right to hold that company responsible and be rightfully compensated. This is especially in true in the case of drug manufacturer Eli Lilly and Co. downplaying important information about harmful or deadly side effects from their drug Zyprexa. Some of the dangers of using Zyprexa include developing diabetes, hyperglycemia, pancreatits and even death from a diabetes-induced heart attack. For over five years the warning signs for Zyprexa have been surfacing but Eli Lily didnt begin to acknowledge the problems until the FDA intervened. The FDA finally ordered Eli Lily to change the label to warn patients of dire complications after hundreds of users reported complaints of diabetes, hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis, pancreatitis and other symptoms. So far there have been 288 cases of diabetes reported in Zyprexa patients, 23 which resulted in death. Although Eli Lilly has acknowledged the dangerous side effects associated with the drug, consumer advocates point out that the warning references continue to be hidden deep within the drugs adverse reactions label. By John R. Haughton The Uses And Dangers Of Ozone (O3)In The Grow Room Ozone or Trivalent Oxygen (O3) is an unstable gas made up of three Oxygen atoms. It is formed when a single Oxygen atom attaches itself to an Oxygen molecule (O2). Ozone is very unstable and will revert back to Oxygen very easily, (2O3 = 3O2).Because this third atom is so easily dislodged from the molecule, it will freely combine with any other molecule that has a spare space for it. This process of is called Oxidation and is the reason why Ozone is an excellent killer of bacteria, moulds and viruses. It is also an effective means of removing odours, which it does by attaching to the scent molecule and altering its chemical makeup. This does not mask the smell, it destroys it at source. Ozone is produced naturally in two ways; Firstly by the chemical reaction with the suns Ultra Violet rays in the upper atmosphere and secondly by Corona-Discharge.For most practical applications Ozone is generated using the Corona-Discharge method. In nature, when there is a thunderstorm, massive voltages are passed through the air as the lightning jumps from cloud to Earth. This electrical discharge with its accompanying blue/white corona causes some of the Oxygen Molecules to break down from O2 to 2O which in turn immediately attaches to another 2 Oxygen molecules giving the equation 2O2 + 2O = 2O3. This also happens when the energy produced by very heavy rain and waterfalls causes the natural production of Ozone. Because any impurities in the air around us, for example exhaust fumes, will have been cleansed by the Ozone molecule combining with them and then reverting to pure Oxygen and oxidised pollutants, which are virtually odourless, the air will smell clean and fresh. So the advantages of using O3 as a means of providing your plants with extra Oxygen are several: The increased Oxygen levels, the odour control, and the anti-microbial and spore controlling properties. Ozone generators can be purchased from most reputable Hydroponics suppliers. These work by passing Oxygen through a strong UV light or, more commonly, by using a high voltage discharge to break down the Oxygen molecules. In practice the UV system produces considerably less O3, per unit of energy used, than does the Corona-Discharge method. There has been a lot of discussion about the dangers associated with Ozone in confined spaces. Ozone has a strong recognizable odour, so very low concentrations soon become apparent. This makes it generally safe to work with. The use of Ozone is thought to be safe in low levels (0.05ppm); however in higher concentrations it can be very dangerous. Because it oxidises materials readily it can cause severe irritation to lung tissue and mucous membranes. Other symptoms include headache and a feeling of tightness in the chest, coughing and dryness in the mouth and throat. Recommended safe levels of maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) for humans are: 0.06 ppm for 8 hours per day 5 days per week (ppm = parts per million). For a maximum of 15 minutes a MAC value of 0.3 ppm may be applied. These levels far exceed that where the gas is noticeable by smell. While it is quite possible and fairly easy to make an Ozone generator at home please bear in mind that a good working knowledge of high voltage electricity and its associated safety procedures is essential to avoid injury or even death. It is always better to spend a little extra money on an article and know that it is safe for you and your family to be around, rather than risk a less safe alternative which could end in a tragedy. By Joe Season There comes a time when tensions reach their top level that any married couple cannot help but just let out their frustration on each other. Fights are generally inevitable. They seem to be something that has to be dealt with. However, if it starts to be serious, conscious efforts should be done to salvage a marriage. Fights Sick and tired of constant bickering and fighting? It is actually such a wonder why other people just cannot help but fight. Fights take place because of failure to compromise, arrive at a consensus or even to have a simple understanding of a situation. They are often triggered by fears, threatened feelings or insecurities. They usually result to constant disagreement, bickering, verbal exchange of angry words, and unfortunately, it gets physical in some cases. The After Effects Recall. In the instances that a couple would fight, what are the effects after? No one actually wins in any argument. The confrontations can be very exhausting. The disagreements create too much tension. Rarely would one feel good after a fight. How to Avoid Fights Being part of the reality of being in a marriage relationship, there should be active effort to avoid fights. If they cannot be avoided, there are ways of minimizing their bad effects or to at least arrive at a helpful resolution. Fight fairly. Here are some ways: 1. Know one another. Know what upsets the other. Part of love and respect for your partner is to avoid insinuating things that would upset the other. 2. Do not be obsessed with being in control. 3. Maintain some space. Sometimes fights result because the husband and the wife are already in each others hair. Once one or the other is feeling the tension rise, it may be best to cool down away from one another with mutual respect. 4. Even if some time apart is desirable, it should be kept in mind that communication must be maintained. Once the spouses have both cooled down, the problem should be discussed and resolved. 5. Big fights usually are started from small misunderstandings. It is essential that each party be able to discuss with the other any matter which he or she finds troubling no matter how trivial it may seem. Current statistics indicate that there are at least 25 million people in the United States alone who have been divorced. Do not be part of this sad statistic. The key to a lasting marriage is to maintain an open communication. Respect each other. Be sensitive to the needs, strengths and weaknesses of each other. With these foundations, the couple will weather any storm. Joe & Emily Season are experts when it comes to relationships and marriage. Along with their lifetime of experience working with their own relationships they have helped many people in their lives find happiness. By Gregg Hall American Indian beadwork is an art that has been handed down for generations among the different Indian cultures. Their beads were used on moccasins, pipebags, belt bags, used on toy cradles, dolls, and other toys, knife sheaths, and different pieces of clothing. The beadwork varied greatly among the different tribes and individuals but each one was unique in its own way. Each tribe had different colors depending on the dyes available from different plants in the areas in which they lived. Much of the beadwork and other Indian Pottery and artwork had a meaning behind it and represented something in their lives. Since the American Indians were on the move a lot they could not have breakables of any kind so they would decorate their utensils, blankets, or anything else they could paint, attach beads, carve or decorate in any other way. They had a gift of imagination and handiwork second to none and there are still many beautiful pieces of artwork made years ago. Some of these can be found on the market for purchase and there are many pieces in museums around the country. To us today, the beadwork is just beautiful pieces of jewelry, etc., but to them they meant much more. it was a way of life for them. It was a way for each one to express themselves. The history of each tribe is a story in itself and it is very interesting to study them. There is still many people doing beadwork today and many of them are decedents of the American Indians of days gone by but their spirit lives on in their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Beadwork and other works of art that the American Indians did should never die. Hopefully the offspring of the pioneers will continue on with the traditions and artwork. Back then it was a necessity for survival but today it is just a hobby but it is at least still being utilized. Before beadwork was introduced into the Indians way of life, they used mainly paints made of dyes from different plants and flowers, shell, and porcupine quills. Quillwork was a sacred art of the Native American Plains tribes. Clothing, utensils and other devices were decorated. It was not until the mid eighteen hundreds that designs began to change. Some of the tribes today who still do beadwork are Pueblo, Five Civilized Tribes, Shoshone, Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapahoe, and many more. Surprisingly enough there is still a lot of beadwork being produced by hand by these tribe’s people. These people are proud and they want their offspring to remember their elders and their traditions from long ago. Beadwork is one way to remind the American Indians of today of who they are and where they came from. It is so thrilling that they have such beautiful art to live on through their heirs. By Steve Valentino Wigs are an artificial arrangement that can be used to conceal hair loss or balding. Wigs have been used for centuries though not always for their intended purpose. Initially wigs were made of animal hair. This was treated with special chemicals, which made them usable in wigs. They were artificially colored and were valued for their cosmetic value. People who wanted to try hair color and styles that were prevalent in other parts of the world. Women who were ranked chose to wear wigs to make them look different from commoners. Since avenues to enhance appearance were limited, wigs more often than not helped people change their looks. Women who sported long hair were socially accepted; hence women who did not resorted to wigs to acquire a desired look. Over the years, people started making wigs from a number of synthetic materials as well as human hair that has been treated correctly. Synthetic wigs introduced new possibilities and designs. Such flexibility prompted the introduction of various colors, styles, lengths and braids. Wigs are fitted with easy to use elastic bands and tie up arrangements, which help secure them in place through the length of the day. People who have been affected by chronic ailments that result in hair loss may choose to wear wigs and resume their regular lifestyle while still coping with treatment. Cosmetic wigs are used for theatrical performances. This helps recreate a certain look that is associated with a bygone era. Actors prefer to wear wigs when shooting for multiple films simultaneously. This helps them acquire different looks at the same time. Performers who are part of dance troupe, carnivals and events are constantly required to wear wigs that are well matched with their sequences. Professionals associated with detective and secret services may need to wear wigs in order to fit in to their new job sites. Wigs are available at salons, local and online stores. By Helen Hecker These free, cheap and easy book marketing, promotion and publicity tips will get you headed in the right direction fast. It’s one thing to write a book, but an entirely different thing to write one that’s saleable, viable, and marketable. As a self publisher you can market and promote your book on a shoestring budget, thousands have done it; be careful about your promotion and marketing dollars and don’t plunge into unknown waters — test, test, and test. Using press releases for marketing or promoting your book or book’s website has become increasingly popular as publishers discover the powerful benefits of using press releases. Mail a press release to at least 1000 print and broadcast contacts just prior to publishing your title and again and again after you publish; you can never send too many. When picked up by wire services, a press release can easily end up generating hundreds of mentions for your book. Send out at least ten press releases to the print and broadcast media in your area every month. Learning to write and use powerful optimized press releases can often drive tons of traffic to your website while providing multiple back links that can lead to increased page rank and numerous top ten search engine rankings for your targeted keywords. Make sure your press release spells out the ‘who, what, where, when, and why.’ Mail a press release to all the trade journals in your field over and over again; you can use the same release. Press releases can generate thousands of dollars in sales when picked up by national trade or print media. Make sure not to overlook the Internet; get yourself interviewed or profiled for sites both about writing, publishing and about the topics covered in your book. Submit articles to online article directories that focus on your book’s topic to drive customers to your website. Contact non-bookstore booksellers and offer to leave books on consignment. Make sure your sales letter or flier is first class; this is your formal presentation of your title to the prospective buyer. If your book solves a problem, focus on this in your marketing. Contact any companies, corporations or organizations that might use your book for promotions; offer significant discounts for volume orders or for thousands of copies offer a specified amount above book production costs. Women buy more books then men; see how you can fit your book into the women’s market. If your book fits a specialty market, find a store that fits the genre and offer to leave books on consignment; many publishers have sold thousands of books this way. Make five telephone calls a day that relate to marketing your book. Arrange to speak at local, regional and national events that relate to your book topic; bring books along and have an associate sell them at the back of the room. Local radio shows and television appearances are good but are often forgotten within hours of the broadcast; make sure to make or get a copy of any television broadcast for future promotions. I’ve seen publishers lose a lot of money paying for expensive display ads, so beware if you do this; I don’t advise it in the beginning — get your feet wet first so you know what you’re doing. Be your own publicist and send a press release along with a review copy of your book to publications in your book’s genre and to book review magazines. Get as many testimonials about your book, as possible, from experts in the field relating to your title, not customers; use on your fliers and back of books. Market your book to your number one market first, and then go after the secondary markets. Find a non-exclusive distributor with a good reputation to carry your book for the book store trade, as well as for other retailers. The success of any book marketing effort depends on a good book and just plain hard work; its been done many times before and you can do it too. Use your book promotion and book marketing dollars wisely; go after the free and cheap resources daily. Make sure to test, test, and test some more before you lay out large sums of money. By Jonathan Johnson Preparing your garden for winter will minimize cold damage and ensure much healthier plants in the spring. The following guidelines will help you in preparing your landscape for the cold winter months. Tropical potted plants need to be brought indoors before the first frost. Place them near a window with strong sunlight - preferably on the south side of your home. Hardier potted plants need some winter protection, especially in colder climates. It is a good idea to place them in a protected area like a garage and bring them out into shaded areas on warm days. Another alternative is to place the plants on the south side of your home against a wall. For best results mulch heavily around the containers. The sunlight will last longer on this side of your home, heating the wall which will radiate heat out through the night. It will also give the plants protection from northerly winds. After the first frost, when your perennials are starting to turn brown and die back, is the best time for mulching. You will want to cover the perennials with a 2-4 layer of mulch, straw or evergreen boughs. This will help protect the plant through their winter dormancy. In very cold climates you can mulch up to a 6 layer of protection. When spring arrives be sure to remove mulch and clip off the dead foliage. New growth should start appearing shortly as the ground continues to warm. Some plants, like roses, need to be protected in the colder climates. A heavy mulching is called for, and if in doubt, mulch! If you live in area that receives less than 1-inch on rain per week, your trees and shrubs will need to be watered throughout the winter. For individuals who live in areas where the ground actually freezes you will want to do one good deep watering before the ground freezes. This should provide enough moisture for the deep roots below the frozen soil. Apply a good 2-4 layer of mulch on top of your landscape fabric around your trees and shrubs. This will help hold in the soils warmth and moisture throughout the winter. In very cold climates you can mulch up to 6 layer of protection and even higher around the trunks of trees and shrubs. It is a good idea to use landscape fabrics in the flower beds in your landscape. Landscape fabrics are designed to help prevent weeds from growing and hold moisture in the soil. By following these few simple guidelines, you can help your plants, trees, and shrubs survive the harsh winter conditions. By Angie Lewis Sound too good to be true? Well think again! Its true, eat what you want whenever you want, and still lose weight. How do I know this? Ive worked the program! This is not a diet. It is a program. If you stick with the program I guarantee, you will lose weight. I usually dont have a problem with my weight, but when I quit smoking, I certainly did. Two weeks after I quit smoking I gained three pounds, and the funny thing was, I was still eating the same amount of food as I was before. After I gained this unnecessary baggage, I knew what I needed to do. Fortunately, I already studied and even participated in a revolutionary new eating program back in the nineties with my husband, and so I knew what to expect and what to do on this program. I can munch on my Pringles, and savor my coffee ice cream whenever I want and still lost weight while doing this program. And so can you! Just ask Harvey and Marilyn Diamond, authors of the best selling book FIT FOR LIFE. They co-authored the Fit For Life book back in 1985, and wrote about this revolutionary new way of eating that has helped thousands lose weight, become healthier, and have more energy. In a nutshell Im going to tell you about it. If you want more details on this program, buy the book or check out their website. Here is how it works. Eat whatever you want, whenever you want, but dont mix a protein food with a starch food. Eat ten baked potatoes if you want, but dont eat any meat with those ten bake potatoes. Or if youre a meat eater, go ahead and eat five steaks, but dont eat starchy foods with your steaks. A starchy food is potatoes, bread, corn, chips, rice, pasta, etc. This way of eating really works! Try it! Eat all the pasta you want, but dont mix meat with it. Eat ten hamburger patties, but dont eat the buns with your patties. Why does this work? Our bodies have a very difficult time assimilating proteins and starches combined. These foods when combined together at a meal take eight to ten hours to fully digest in the stomach. Before the food even has a chance to digest, it begins to rot in the gut. Improper food combining impedes the digestion and elimination cycles. Poor assimilation of food makes our bodies tired and constipated. It takes so much energy trying to digest meat combined with a starch, that all we want to do after eating a poorly combined meal is take a nap. And the food still sits in our stomachs for another twenty hours putrefying! If we only ate the steak with a salad and side of vegetable, it would only take three to four hours to digest. We wouldnt feel tired afterwards, and we could eat all we want of that steak and salad and lose weight! Unbelievable you say? Not really. My husband and I have been on this eating program for over ten years, and we both absolutely love the results. It keeps our weight down and we have so much more energy when we properly combine our food groups. I have been known to come off the program for various reasons; the biggest being not having the opportunity to cook my own meals. If you go off this program, changes do take place in the body the very next day; constipation and lack of energy are the biggest culprits. After several days away from the program major changes take place where it affects the way you look and feel. If you dont feel good you dont look good either. This affects your whole outlook on life, which is detrimental to your spiritual and emotional well-being. Stick with the program! Of course the most important part of this program, as with any program is adhering to it no matter what. Dont think that just because you lost 5 pounds in four weeks, and have more energy that you can stop the program. The most difficult part about this program is not cooking our own meals. Eating out in restaurants or going on vacation can take us out of our eating schedule and we cant always stick to the proper combining of foods. You might find that you gained a few pounds while enjoying your escape from the daily grind, but hey, you can always go back to the program. Just remember, to be fit for life we have to continue the program for optimal weight and energy. Go ahead and try it for a month! And see the results for yourself! By Mary Desaulniers In the weight loss industry, hunger is a dirty word, the villain that must be stopped in its tracks; however, it is this determination to eradicate hunger that has created the worst propaganda for diets. DIET has become a dirty word, associated with pain, starvation and all things “undo-able.” But if we look at hunger more closely, we will see that villainy is only part of its heritage. Hunger is more like Edmund in “The Chronicles of Narnia.” His cravings for Turkish Delights temporarily made him succumb to the wicked Witch until he broke through the cold inertia of her spell and re-created himself anew. Hunger can be more appropriately viewed as an interim stage, part of a process of transformation. What we learn from our hunger is the key to long-term success in weight management. There are different kinds of hunger; there is the real hunger for sustenance that comes after a hard day’s work. This hunger is necessary for our survival as it tells our body that it needs to replace the energy that has been expended. Then there is the hunger we feel when we are boredthe Sunday afternoon variety that creeps into our bones like a bout of flu. You feel hungry even after a meal and you can’t seem to shake it off. A more insidious form is the hunger we feel at the end of the day, a hunger that is ravenous, partly because we are hungry, but mostly because we are carrying the ravages of the working world home and we have no other avenue to tame the beast. This is the form of hunger that leads to unbridled bingeing and weight gain, and as long as the issues ( at work or at home) remain unresolved, the body will deposit layers of subcutaneous fat much like an armor to shield itself against what it feels to be an unjust grievance. Yet it is this hunger that is the most redeeming of the three as it places in our path a problem that is actually an opportunity for personal growth and transformation. Change is inherent to the nature of the body; it is through change that we evolve, through change that matter is transformed into light. “Many physicists believe that all matter is ultimately composed of trapped light,” so claims physicist Fred Allan Wolf in his book “Mind into Matter” (46). We are “trapped light” when we are trapped by the “unconscious ideas that we’ve been taught”(62)such as “I am this or I am that. I am not good at this. I am meant to be fat or slow or lethargic.” These are all part of the armor that keeps us tied to the ground. But this trapped light can be released when matter is brought into motion. We are not only talking about physical motion like exercise (which fits very well into the particulars of this dynamic), but creative motionthe meaningful activity which we all know is capable of birthing the unknown or suppressed self, the self trapped by inertia and fear, the self that sees no way out of its misery other than bingeing itself to oblivion. Jungian analyst, Marion Woodman, calls this inertia “the Great Mother crocodile,” that prefers “sleeping in the mud to transforming in the fire”(”Dancing in the Flames” 24). She is playing on the words “mother,” “matter,” “mater”primal mud of oblivion. Edmund was part of this primal mud (he was looking for his Great Mother in the Witch) until his perception was cleansed and he saw a new reality. ” No new reality can exist without a new perception of reality”( “Mind into Matter” 49).And that’s why the hunger Edmund had for Turkish Delights takes on new meaning; it will no longer be fed by the Cold Spell; it will now be fed by the body in motionthe Great Battle against the Witch for Narnia. And so it is with us. We need to find out what the source of our hunger is. What is the grievance that is eating us up? What unrealized dreams lay dormant under our cold spell? What possibilities for growth and spiritual awakenings have we stifled because of work, relationships or fear? What changes need we make to resurrect those dreams and desires? Will the path be difficult? Yes! Will it be fraught with danger? Yes! But need we fear it? No! Because we have the power within us to “birth” this new self. And as long as we keep our vision steady before us, we will succeed. Moreover, there are guides along the wayweight loss coaches, well-meaning friends and family, our own intuitionsthese can provide us with the tools to make the journey successful. It is far more dangerous to keep things the way they are. The armor of fat and denial we have built around us becomes more impenetrable with time. Unless we choose to see and create a new reality, the old Mother prevails. That’s why it is so important for us to understand the meaning of hunger. Sometimes hunger is not simply hunger for food. It is hunger for the emergence of a new self, hunger for a birth that, like any other birth, is a labor in progress. Are we serious enough about our well-being to confront our hunger, turn its energy around so that it serves, rather than stifle, us?
